It is insoluble in acids, cre,,sol, ethanol, benzene,etc., but insoluble in met,,hanol and ether.Cellulose derivatives with carboxymethyl substitutes are prepared by treating cellulose with sod,ium hy,droxide to form alkali cellulose and reacting with chloroacetic acid. Glucose units that make up cellulose have three replaceable hydroxyl groups, so products with different degrees of replacement can be obtained.
